Would We Know a Revival If We Say One? – J. I. Packer reflects on his longing to see a revival.

There is Nothing Common About Grace – Grace is a provision for men who are so fallen that they cannot lift the ax of justice; so corrupt that they cannot change their own natures; so adverse to God that they cannot turn to Him; so blind that they cannot see Him; so deaf that they cannot hear Him; and so dead that He Himself must open their graves.

Astronomy Images – I love images of the heavens as, for me, they remind me of the grandeur, magnitude, and shear intelligence of God.  In this set, images 1, 5, and 7 are my favorites.

Christians Are Sinners Too – Wow, what a novel idea.  As much as we like to think we have progressed beyond sin now that we are saved, there is nothing like this article to remind us of what our sinful nature is like.

Bigger Fish to Fry – Jesus’s mission is bigger than next Tuesday’s election. Way bigger.

The Difference Between Our Sanctification and Our Glorification – A short 5 minute video that illustrates these two issues very well.

Quote:

Let me grant, in the first place, that the believer cannot cite a deeper ground for revelation than its divine authority, which he or she recognizes by faith. But this is not to say that believers have nothing to say to the opponents of that revelation. True: they have no airtight proofs; they cannot move the opponent toward faith; but they have at least as much to say in defending as the opponent has in attacking scriptural authority. Unbelief, too, is rooted, not in proofs and arguments, but in the heart. In this respect believers and unbelievers are in exactly the same position. Their convictions are integrally bound up with their whole personality and are only a posteriori supported by proofs and arguments. And now, when the two parties oppose each other with these a posteriori proofs and arguments, the position of believers is not less favorable than that of unbelievers. God is sufficiently knowable to those who seek him and also sufficiently hidden to those who run away from him. “There is enough light for those who only desire to see and enough darkness for those of a contrary disposition. There is enough clarity to illumine the elect and enough darkness to humble them. There is enough darkness to render the reprobate sightless and enough clarity to condemn them and to render them inexcusable.” The state of religion, theism, revelation, and Scripture is not as hopeless as science has for years wanted us to believe. – Herman Bavinck

Iran Launching Massive Arrests of Evangelicals – Sometimes it costs quite a bit to be a Christian.  That is something we know little about here in the Western world.

Quote:

They encircled us in a deadly ring, and one kept urging another to strike the first blow or fire the first shot. My heart rose up to the Lord Jesus; I saw Him watching all the scene. My peace came back to me like a wave from God. I realized that I was immortal till my Master’s work with me was done. The assurance came to me, as if a voice out of Heaven had spoken, that not a musket would be fired to wound us, not a club prevail to strike us, not a spear leave the hand in which it was held vibrating to be thrown, not an arrow leave the bow, or a killing stone the fingers, without the permission of Jesus Christ, whose is all power in Heaven and on Earth. He rules all Nature, animate and inanimate, and restrains even the Savage of the South Seas. In that awful hour I saw His own words, as if carved in letters of fire upon the clouds of Heaven: “Seek, and ye shall find. Whatsoever ye shall ask in My Name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” I could understand how Stephen and John saw the glorified Savior as they gazed up through suffering and persecution to the Heavenly Throne! – John G. Paton

Daily Roundup

Is The Gospel Enough? – When it becomes chic to talk about the gospel then watch out because much gospel-talk will contain more talk than gospel.

The Colossian “Hymn” – Colossians 1:15-20, is one of the most Christ-glorifying passages of all the New Testament.  Imagine a hymn using this text.

Elements of Productive Bible Study:  READ! – One of the key elements of productive Bible study is to read the Bible.   A novel concept, I agree.  But osmosis hasn’t worked for me so far.

Is God’s Love Unconditional? – Where in Scripture do we find this notion of the unconditional love of God? If God’s love is absolutely unconditional, why do we tell people that they have to repent and have faith in order to be saved?

I Feel Sorry For God – It’s sort of darkly-funny that a people who are themselves so unable, unwilling to keep the Law can be also so intent on making sure God is judging other people.

Looking Away from Self to Jesus – How we need to do a better job of this in our walk in Christ.

Quote:

The Gospel, buy it’s nature, to our nature, is offensive.  If we are not being offended by the Gospel everyday we need to examine and see if we are walking in “The Way”. – Thom Cole

A Prayer for What I Need Most – AMEN!

The Invisible Church – Much confusion has resulted and continues to result from misunderstandings regarding the meaning of the visible church, the invisible church, and the relation between the two.  In this message, Dr. Ligon Duncan will seek to clarify the meaning of this important biblical doctrine.

Where Are The Jeremiah’s When We Need Them – Like Jeremiah’s time, we have come to believe the present is decided by the policies of a nation rather than the will of a holy and compassionate God. We continue to buy into the myth that our hope is in Washington or on Wall Street.

Quote:

The love which a pious man bears to God and goodness, is not so much by virtue of a command enjoining him so to do, as by a new nature instructing and prompting him to it; nor doth he pay his devotions as unavoidable tribute only to appease the divine justice, or quiet his clamorous conscience; but those religious exercises are the proper emanations of the divine life, the natural employments of the new-born soul. – Henry Scougal

Does the Doctrine of Unconditional Election Make God a “Respecter of Persons”? – Election from another perspective.

By All Means Save Some – Paul wasn’t trying to be “cool” or “popular”, he was trying to reach the lost.

Quote:

Some persons on earth do not know where to put the crown; but those in heaven do. They place the diadem on the right head; and they ever sing “And he hath made us what we are.”

Well, then, beloved, would not this note well become us here? For “what have we that we have not received?” Who hath made us to differ? I know, this morning, that I am a justified man; I have the full assurance that

“The terrors of law and of God,
With me can have nothing to do;
My Saviour’s obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.”

There is not a sin against me in God’s book they have all been for ever obliterated by the blood of Christ. and cancelled by his own right hand. I have nothing to fear; I cannot be condemned. “Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?” Not God, for he hath justified; not Christ. for he hath died. But if I am justified, who made me so? I say–”And hath made me what I am.” Justification from first to last. is of God. Salvation is of the Lord alone.

 – Charles Spurgeon
