We have all heard it said. There are bumper stickers and T-Shirts proclaiming it, but after looking at the Word of God, it’s hard to reconcile. What am I talking about? “God hates the sin but loves the sinner.” Seems more and more preachers are proclaiming that from the pulpit to their congregations, but how do you reconcile that to Psalm 5:5-6 which says:
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. (ESV)
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong; you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, Lord, detest. (NIV)
Even the liberal version, The Message, makes it pretty plain:
Hot-Air-Boaster collapses in front of you; you shake your head over Mischief-Maker. God destroys Lie-Speaker; Blood-Thirsty and Truth-Bender disgust you. (The Message)
I contend that we need to stick to the Word of God and what it says and start judging all the pithy and Christianized sayings more strictly by the Word.
